The passenger pigeon was exterminated because it was poorly adapted to a changed environment. It was not a good thing, but neither did it drastically alter the environment. Other species moved into that ecological niche and thrived there. Were CO2 levels "dangerous" in the Carboniferous period -- a time of unprecedented and unequaled plant growth?
