Since the first I ever heard "if it saves just one life, it's worth it", I have asked one question" "if it COSTS just one life, is it STILL worth it?".
The problem with the statement is the assumption that everything about the "masses" is either static - or immaterial, as they are not intelligent enough to think it through. Those "smarter than I" who believe there MUST be government action will continue to ignore the knowledge within the "masses" and enact some complex scheme that, thru their own ignorance, results in greater harm through "unintended consequences". After all, they did not see the potential consequence of declaring "gun-free zones" being viewed as a safe place to commit mayhem.
Quite a lot of "the masses" saw it, though.
