In my opinion this would actually help the republicans. Fighting over cutting spending on the debt ceiling has the president saying, "you must pay what you have already spent." A bit of BS to be sure, but something that will be pay. Obama can blame the republicans for shutting down the government. It is better to fight over the continuing resolution. Make your stand there.
