I see it as our hope that our moral compass, being directed by God, is on course. That as a jury among peers we can judge a compass that is clearly out of whack with our God-given sense of right and wrong. If Ted Kennedy had lived in a vacuum he could go wherever his hedonism took him, but he set himself up as a leader and hence a role model. He failed as a role model, so what did he do? He made promises to voters that the handouts would continue if they'd just vote for him. He probably knew the unsustainability of his promises, but hey, kicking the can down the road, kept him on his lofty pedestal.
