I have to agree that tragedies happen because we have free will, and I also believe God does not directly intervene in earthly events, so bad things do happen to good people. However, I take issue with Hawkins's conflation of "good people" and "Christians" or "believers" in item #2. Even if you believe atheists, agnostics, and followers of non-Christian faiths are condemned to hell (I don't, but that's another argument), don't you have to grant that many of them are indeed "good people" in the way they conduct their lives--kind, generous, loving? I certainly know many who are!
