Indeed. The problem is that far too many in the GOP establishment are avowed statists masquerading as conservatives for political expediency. They don't want to punch holes in the left's narrative because doing so would undermine their own desire to tell all the little people how to behave. Just look at how eager Republicans are to construct grand new agencies and programs as long as the line items sound vaguely nationalistic, but have never mounted a serious push to reduce Washington's net footprint on society. I'm told that at one time there was a conservative presence on the nationa level, but those days must be long gone because the only ideologies I see on display are liberal and not-as-liberal.
