There is a running joke that says that we must have taken the part of Mexico that had paved roads. In reality, the land taken in the Mex-Am war was a sparsly populated desert and any one that lived there and thier decendants were lucky to have been annexed by a thriving European style country that could provide the modern society that they currently enjoy instead of the violent gang controlled cesspool that Mexicans are currently running from. It's not the land that made the stark difference we see today, it's the people that inhabit the two countries.
