There are surely many, many hard-working people the world over. It alone is not sufficient for success; it is not a guarantee. One ought to consider the definition of "success" to many of those persons. Certainly, not everyone will be as financially successful as Bill Gates; but does that mean no one else can be successful? Of course not. Being successful may mean to many that they can feed and house their families and have a bit more for savings or to start a small business. That a few will be wildly successful financially is the corollary to the many who will not. Life is not fair and that's based on the infinite variability of the distribution of human talents.
