Depending on elevation, crops were planted at different times of the year (and/or more than once a year). The Romans don't strike me as the kind of folks who would really care too much about any "disruption" they might cause the locals. But the major problem is that evidence from Scripture (which includes the onset of John's and Yeshua's ministry) supports an early fall or early spring (late winter, if you will) date.
