The first time, it was about economics and the liberty of the people instead of control by some. Just as in the northern states, slavery would have come to a logical end in the South had the war not been fought. The transition of 4,000,000 people from one status to another would have taken time. Now, it is again about economics with the Federal government driving each state into poverty. With Obama taking on many of the attitudes of Lincoln, why do you think he would not declare war on his own people. He does it now daily. My question is why would someone have to "win". That would indicate someone would have to "lose".
