Not buying UAW and instead buying foreign nameplates doesn't just hurt the UAW, it hurts the entire manufacturing sector in the USA, which is much larger than the UAW. Ford has about 20,000 non-union white collar workers in North America, and GM has even more white collar workers. Both companies have suppliers that employ tens of thousands of non-union employees. As a whole the US auto industry is the largest spender of R&D dollars in the United States, and the US companies outspend Japanese rivals by far. Honda does the most in the US of any foreign car company, then Toyota, but buying Korean or German just contributes to the decline of the US industrial base, and grows the trade deficit
