This is not the economy "going over the cliff," but the government "going over the cliff." Given the ineffectiveness of our government, the minimal value of what government workers do, their inordinately high compensation, the corruption of our elected officials, their unwillingness to cut the budget, and the fact that most government employees are dues paying members of the "takings coalition," wouldn't a freefall be a good thing?
