Although I hate the way schools are more and more resembling prisons (something I've never felt really good about), it is those schools that are far less vulnerable. Obviously, high schools were the focus; who would think it would be an issue at an elementary school? These facilities have double sets of wire reinforced safety glass doors, an access control person who is trained to assess potential threats who can buzz a person in through one or both sets of doors (or 'trap' someone in-between until an office can be on the scene), and last, but most important, a uniformed, police trained and ARMED resource officer (experienced cop is even better). My community is looking into creating such a position at our elementary school.
