Just yesterday, I got two handgun permits and used one to purchase myself a handgun for protection of my home and family. In the state where I live (NC), there is, in fact, a criminal background check, residency confirmation, and mental health statement required to receive permission from the state to own said handguns. I have absolutely NO problem with this procedure, and am quite pleased my state goes to measures it does to screen applicants. But, seriously... how could any law enforcement agency ascertain that an applicant had a "relationship breakdown"? Where do such things get documented? And what does losing one's job really have to do with handgun ownership?
