The "assault" weapon the young man possessed was a semi-automatic weapon (M4). It was not a military weapon and did not have select fire (burst or full auto). As a semi-automatic you can fire it no faster than a revolver. It requires a trigger pull for each round to fire. There is no adequate definition of the phrase "assault weapon". A baseball bat may be used to assault another human being.
