That is actually not true. There was no middle class until Henry Ford. He was strongly anti-union, but he believed in offering good wages and inexpensive products so that his workers could buy the things they built. Soon after many other companies followed suit as to not lose their workers to Ford. It was that that built the middle class, not the unions that he had opposed so strongly.
