As a floor RN and then as a nurse manager, I can tell you EMR's are nightmares. We end up babysitting computers instead of delivering patient based care; we look at machines instead of patients What they do seem to be good for is that anyone who is connected to the hospital computer network and has the proper ID passcodes can access patient records to check up on all aspects of delivered patient care. ie. What testing was done for which diagnosis, how long were stays, how often was a patient readmitted, what medications were received, in other words - the entire inpatient chart. Death panels will be creeping up insidiously.
