If husbands and wives (and sometimes ex-spouses) are going to collect Social Security benefits, then there must be some kind of licensing or official recognition. Do you want the domestic partner who never bothered to marry the man she lived with (even though they shared the same home and had kids) to turn around and collect Social Security benefits the same as a wife would? I don't. If you didn't marry because it suited you not to (and there are reasons why it would suit, particularly with regards to Medicaid), no way should you collect income after the partner's death when you never wanted to make it official.
