Mexico has as many natural resources as the U.S. but has always been poorer. The key lies in the cultural structure allowing government to be dominant protecting the interests of the few from the liberty of choice.
40 yrs ago, a middle class man in Mexico told me that the people of Mexico would revolt from their government except the government had managed to restrict access to guns, medicine and food. So people were just fighting to stay alive or flee to another country so to support those left behind.
In this void of respect for law, the criminal drug gangs were the only able to gain the resources to threaten the government's power. It doesn't offer much hope for Mexico and could offer a glimpse of what we face.
