My Southern Granny said "Use it up -- wear it out -- make it do or do without." She had 8 children and an invalid husband during the Great Depression and World War II. She was a Southern Lady and she managed. Ditto my Northern Granny, who was the mother of 10 boys and 2 girls (and said if it had been the other way around she wouldn't have managed) during the Depression; not only did they scratch a living on a rock in Wisconsin, but she sent 6 of her boys to War, and they all came home. They knew how, in those days.
