It's noteworthy that this president has not one, but two unyielding passions that involve miniscule amounts of money but a lot of non-fiscal harm. One is the incessant demand for hiking marginal rates for the wealthy, and this is the other, the mandatory providing of contraceptives and abortifacients. In the latter case, the monthly cost to women who choose to obtain them is, maybe ten bucks or so. The hikes in the top marginal tax rates will, at best, bring in a pittance when compared to the deficits they're supposed to help correct.
Why should the president dig in his heels so obstinately for two things that have such minimal fiscal importance?
It's political. Both of these inflict severe blows upon important and cherished values.
