Republicans see the food stamp numbers as a harbinger of doom, when they should feel that way about the unemployment numbers and the numbers of children in poverty. That the assistance program rolls are what cause Republicans to jump and shout reveals that they have no interest in addressing what it will actually take to get these people back to dignified employment, but would rather grandstand for the interests of big business. For too long the right has laid the problem at the feet of social programming, calling them "entitlements" as though people who receive them feel some sense of self-justification that they don't deserve, then indicating the problem is that the poorest and most vulnerable among us haven't helped themselves.
