What is being called a "fiscal cliff" is a negligible part of a much larger problem, really just an opportunity to demogogue the "evil rich" and blame Republicans for coming disasters. The only remedy for the problem (which the major players don't even mention) is to reduce government until it can function on incoming revenue and then reduce it some more, so that there is a surplus to put toward retiring the debt. No one in Washington is interested in this because it would destroy their ability to bribe, threaten, manipulate, reward their supporters and punish their enemies; the legal preferences, regulations, taxes, handouts, subsidies, etc., that we can't afford, are the power base of the politicians who control the federal government.
