gmallast, my friend, you left out one very important thing in your assertion: ADVERTISING. I'm sure that you have noticed lately that the ads on the Internet have gone up exponentially ever since TV, radio, and especially the mighty newspaper have almost gone the way of the dinosaur. It's "what sells today". The reporter who can by their delivery drag in a few more customers for the advertisers is the one who is seen the most.
I'll admit, there ain't much to look at, or listen to, on TV today.
