I like the laid back attitude. I've seen far too many articles with the religious folk and non-religious folk sniping at one another about how they do/don't observe the holiday correctly. In my own opinion, I feel Christmas is what you want it to be. It's as much secular as it is religious nowadays, so go on and observe it in the way that brings you the most happiness. The overall message is, as you say, peace and goodwill. Seems far too many forget those sentiments in their zeal to sneer at everyone who celebrates (or not) in a different way.
