Most producers don't care about the property their labor produces. They do care about the money other people are willing to pay for that property. The wage acts as a way to assign a value to the labor required to produce property, without requiring the producer to stop producing and act as a full time salesman in addition to his "day job." Without a wage, there would be limited incentive to produce commercially useful amounts of property.
