"I don't expect young people to become conservatives ... [b]ut is libertarianism really too much to ask?"
The recent election proved that there are not enough "conservatives" to swing a presidential election, even when faced with a threat like BO. Young people can be recruited to vote conservative - but they are one of several blocs that, rightly or wrongly, reject the R's harping on social issues (abortion, gay rights, etc.).
That's where libertarianism comes in - individual freedom to do what you like, socially, so long as it does not infringe the rights of others, plus fiscal conservatism that makes RINO's cringe. R's can cling to social issues if they must, but they may be guaranteeing fiscal ruin.
