In California the CTA takes what they call a "voluntary" contribution from the paycheck of every member, whether the member wants to contribute or not. The member has the right to petition to get the money back, but the union gets to use the money, interest free, until they return it. A member may "opt out" of political contributions (not the aforementioned one), but the union still charges the same dues, but with the promise that those dollars will be used for other purposes. If a teacher does not want to be a member, the teacher still pays a "fair share" amount that is almost identical to the dues amount. It's a scam.
