I use to manage a small apartment community in Indianapolis. An immigrant from Russia was being sponsored by a local Synagogue, and they agreed to pay his rent for one year. It was assumed that after a year, he would be able to get a job and pay his own way. The rent on his apartment was only $430 a month. Even in 1997, not a bad deal. He never got a job, and when he lost his rent subsidy, he received an eviction letter for non-payment of rent. The man came down to the office screaming and yelling. We could not FORCE him to move!! This man was obviously used to a socialist system. He acted like he was king of the world. How DARE we evict him. It was a lesson I wish every school child could have witnessed.
