We didn't "corrupt" the word. Atheists ("a theos" - "against god") specifically believe that there is no God, and yes there is a difference between atheist (there is no god) and agnostic (there may be a god, but I don't care) - it's rather childish to claim otherwise, let alone make up a new word to describe yourself, when the definitions are so readily available.
