Good article, Regis. Not having read you Dad's book I'm hoping that it involves training and obtaining a firearm. Either way, that needs to be on the list, and ahead of any self-defense training. Not because it is necessarily more effective, but quick to put into effect.
Also, as someone who has trained in martial arts for years, the most effective self defense 'system' IMHO is Target Focus Training (http://www.targetfocustraining.com/). I have no stake in that company, I just know it is focused on how to survive a life and death violent incident by crippling one's attacker ASAP.
