It all comes down to one's perception of human nature. Socialists agree with Karl Marx that human beings are basically good and egalitarian. In other words, they will try there best without economic rewards just because they like their toil and it benefits others. They blame mercantilism and capitalism for creating the "veneer" of self-interest. In other words, they believe society can reach the point of being like Star Trek where they have no money and some how people gravitate to the most optimal part of society for that individual. Progressives, and to a degree the 1960's liberals, believe captitalism makes the individual a "necessitous man", someone who is stuck seeking necesities and therefore not really free to pursue happiness. cont
