The country, overall, will pay the price for lacking the vigilance to uphold and defend the Constitution. The old Republic will not recover.
It's evident from his rhetoric and behavior that Machiavelli's "Il Principe" is the guiding basis of Obama's governance, not the Constitution.
I do want to state a concern that Machiavelli is often misrepresented. As I recall, he wrote "The Prince" to placate the Duke of Lombardy who had placed him under house arrest at the time. He did not necessarily espouse the principles he documented.
As I understand, Machiavelli preferred Republics (not Monarchies) as a form of government. Machiavelli observed the historical cycles of Republics and commented on them in his books titled "Discourses on Livy".
