Nowhere in the Bible does it condone the government taking care of the poor. Rather it commands believers to care for the widowed and orphans. Not those who can work. The biggest problem we have is affluence and the expectation that we all deserve it regardless of whether we have earned it. At the very least those who receive benefits from the government should have to earn it in some fashion. To quote Paul, "If a man will not work, he shouldn't eat." The right tax is probably a flat tax with limited deductions for charitable contributions and mortgage interest.
