I know that mood disorders are real, and they are more than "sad feelings." Unless you have spoken with someone who is in the throes of major depression, you cannot appreciate just how distorted perceptions of reality can be. But I also know that mood disorders usually are temporary. A few people descend into psychosis, but most recover with time. And character counts. I have seen people with severe depression who are actively contemplating suicide but stay alive and stay working because it is their duty to their family.
I have also seen whole clusters of young men who believe it is their right to stay on SSI using mood disorder as an excuse, and whose day consists of TV and street drugs. Again, character counts.
