There is another another story about the NHS, possibly even worse: The National Institute for Clinical Excellence, (NICE) decide which medicines are cost effective enough for NHS doctors to proscribe. Certain treatments for cancer are very expensive, but prolong the patients life only for a few months. Such medicines are not available on the NHS.
Now that, though harsh, is economically understandable. But the horrifying bit is this: patients who opt to use those medications AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE are deemed to have 'gone private' and are banned from all NHS treatment.
