To make sure the point is made, separate the "rich" vs. "middle-class" tax cut extensions, abstain from the former, and vote for the latter. Make it absolutely clear they oppose it, but abstain, and let him own what happens next.
Of course, the Republicans won't do it - they'll salvage some "compromise" that, when things go bad, the President will be able to say "Things would have been much better, if only those Republicans hadn't dragged their feet." And, with the willing assistance of the media, most people will believe it.
Otherwise, in 2016, Hillary will be voted in to continue our long, slow decline.
