I don't get why there is so much drama over this issue. What the Republicans need to do is state clearly for the record that they are opposed to raising taxes during a bad economy, but the result of political gridlock would result in the same tax increases plus increases on the other tax brackets. In exchange for working along they should be able to demand some real spending cuts, or if the Democrats refuse then hang that on them. We all know that raising the taxes is symbolic and won't close the budget gap, but by giving Obama what he wants then he and his party will have to explain why his "soak the rich" campaign rhetoric didn't pay off.
