This is a pretty classic example of how correlation can be confused with causation. Basically, these are fields people enter because they like the work more than they care about the money. The writer implies the only reason to choose a field you wish to study or pursue is whether it pays you more money. The implication that these fields do NOT make the world a better place is completely unfounded.
