Ahh, atheists! To quote a great 17th C thinker Rene Descartes, "I think, therefore I am". Yes, this is true. As you think you are the master of your own universe, you are a demi-god in your own mind. You also are judge and jury over all, handing out blame, assigning value and condemnation. The slave and the dictator are two sides of the same coin. The story of Jesus is of absolute liberty in aligning one's will to the will of the Creator. In that, there is no contradiction between reality and perception. I think, therefore I have thoughts, is more like it. Thought, the "I", is not reality, but is the critic, the judge of others, the devil within. The Psalm says "Be still, and know that I am God". Be still, be quiet, listen...and learn.
