Most of us were spoon-fed a fairy-tale version of American history, in which the noble North invaded the knuckle-dragging South, motivated by the high cause of freeing the slaves. But since several northern states were ALSO slave states, it doesn't make sense that they would invade the South to free slaves. We also learn that Lincoln was an idealistic crusader for equality between the races. In actuality, he was a particularly loathsome racist, having supported a plan to forcibly ship all blacks back to Africa, or--if costs proved prohibitive--to the Caribbean islands.
