People were into heavy drug use back in the 1800s. Opium was put into medications. Coca Cola originally began as a med and had cocaine in it. Hence, the name Coca Cola. Cream soda was spiked with opium and many people became cream soda addicts. There were entire towns in Connecticut that had 100% of their populations addicted to opium. Drugs were more prevalent back then than they are now.
