hypothetical: you're the CEO of a company that will tank within the next few months, yu know it, but you aren't allowed to sell off your stock, because it's "inside" information. If you'd been allowed to sell your stock, that would've sent a message to the rest of the industry, indicating problems with the company. So, instead of you getting rich, and a few people losing their shirts, perhaps thousands of others invest in the company, and everyone loses their shirt a few months later when the company folds...
