As a libertarian, I've finally given up on the Republican Party, I do have mixed emotions on farm subsidies. On the one hand, I don't think the government should subsidize anything, let the free market decide. On the other hand, I know that agriculture production is not predictable, drought, floods, pestilence, freezing temps, etc, cause fluctuations. So in some crops, primarily, food stocks, we need to produce surpluses, and a pure free market does not like surpluses, ergo, we need to encourage some over production. And I don't see an effective way of accomplishing, without subsidizing.
