I have mixed emotions.
Having ties to China, Ransom is absolutely right to call out Joshua170. Under Mao, peasants simply couldn't move off their land, a kind of serfdom China hadn't known for thousands of years earlier (yes, folks, Marx was wrong, and absolutely ignorant about anything outside Europe). Further, Mao's experiments in the countryside were ruinous, even if egalitarian.
But, I'll also add that one reason why safety conditions in Chinese industry have long been appalling is that there are no independent unions focusing on the problem (even if I may agree that unions sometimes cease to be an instrument for improving working conditions and end up as institutions furthering their own interests rather than those of workers).
