Many years ago when I was right out of high school, I got a job for the summer in a union shop. One day I was in the middle of a task when a bell rang and everybody stopped working. I didn't know what was going on so I just kept doing what I was doing. A minute later some guy grabbed me by the arm and told me it was break time. I told him I'd take a break in a minute when I finished. He turned out to be the shop steward and he ordered me in no uncertain terms to stop working immediately. That was my introduction to union philosophy:
-- Never work harder or more efficiently than anyone around you.
-- Wages and promotions are dictated by the union, not by personal initiative.
-- Never, ever question union rules.
