Secular religions have always led to disaster. History is as much the story of religion as philosophy and philosophy divorced from values rooted in religion has taken us either nowhere or worse. That the scientific method evolved in Christian Europe, and was driven by men of faith is not an accident. Markets are founded on the notion of individual freedom which is rooted in human dignity founded on Jewish/Christian scripture. Many physicists are drifting back toward belief in the supernatural, or at least awe that leaves them near there. Utopianism in all its forms is based on faith and requires suspension of rational inquiry. Progressive utopianism is not a lot different from the hopeless belief in a utopia built on reason.
