I once in the mid '00's went to a convention at 1 of the "above average" hotel chains, in a new facility they'd just opened, in a part of town converted from industrial waterfront to tourist trap.
There were holes in walls, lights that didn't work. After the 1st morning they no longer distributed room service menus. The restaurant was so understaffed that we waited in long lines for breakfast nearly an hour, looking at 1/3 of the tables sitting empty.
About 2 mo.s later, that chain went belly-up.
