I am not a big fan of unions, perhaps because I worked in a closed shop in a non-right-to-work state, and had to pay union dues for 32 years. Still, your characterizations are unfair. Closed shops do, indeed, foster- or at least provide cover for- incompetence and laziness, but most union workers who operate out of the halls understand you can't have work without business. The union bosses, however, are a different story.
