A couple of years ago I had my kids (in their senior year) budget their food at a dollar a meal. They did not starve. Hot cereal, egg, and banana for breakfast, bologna or PBJ, hand made carrot sticks & apple for lunch, and mac&cheese with a hot dog, canned veggies for dinner, and yogurt for dessert fits into the food stamp allotment, without coupons, school lunches, or any home grown or donated food. I have yet to hear of a single case of starvation in the US due to lack of government subsidies.
